New Mexico Industries Strategy Project--Blueprint for a Sustainable Industry Cluster in New Mexico

Industry Partners & Recruiting

handshakeNew Mexico invites select industry partners with a strategic interest in the media industries domain to join us in an exciting collaboration.

The State's distinctive assets, which can serve as the foundation for cluster formation for itself and its partners, include:

  • A strong technology base and culture, including directly relevant work at UNM (computer graphics and digital art), Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories (high-performance computing and complex simulations, cryptography, ultra-high-speed data transmission, and other areas), the Santa Fe Institute (complex adaptive systems), and throughout the State's 12 research institutions.
  • A superior federal funding and research infrastructure, totaling over $6 billion annually.
  • One of the highest concentrations of Ph.D.’s and advanced degree holders anywhere, representing a full range of academic and scientific disciplines.
  • An unsurpassed culture of creativity and artistic expression, in close proximity to this scientific base.
  • A highly competitive incentives program for startup businesses, technology businesses, and media production.
  • A successful history of hosting visiting film and TV productions, and growing entrepreneurial efforts.
  • The active support of Governor Richardson, Economic Development Dept. Secretary Homans, and the New Mexico State Legislature of the industry as an important sector for the State.
  • Progressive and supportive labor unions representing creative and production personnel, engaged and active in the industry's growth and development.
  • The presence of surprising numbers of media and IT professionals with either a primary or secondary residence here.
  • Unique indigenous Native American and Hispanic culture, and southwest identity (as a basis for creating original content).
  • Excellent basic production resources, including natural light (340 days of sunshine annually), open space, and regional settings.

National Security Applications

There is an accelerating trend within the defense and security industries to employ visualization, modeling, and simulation techniques. This funding and momentum can be used to drive the development of new technologies, tools, and processes, with consumer and entertainment applications available. New Mexico has core competencies in the entire "value chain" of this type of research, from marketing, lobbying and securing federal contracts to actual research and delivery/maintenance of work product.

Technology Assets

New Mexico has enormous digital media assets in the form of its ability to create commercialized technologies and products, and from them to maintain competitive advantage for the State's media industries and partners.

We will create enhanced tech transfer mechanisms within the labs focused on this sector, working in conjunction with a focused tech commercialization process serving the media industries, that allows us to harness the potential of our research base in collaboration with our partners.

Creative Resources

New Mexico has an unparalleled creative environment and a core population of creative people in film, media, and the arts in general. The State has traditionally been a magnet for creators and innovators in the arts, and more recently in the technology space. It hosts one of the largest art markets in the world in Santa Fe. As in the popular book "The Rise of the Creative Class," this type of environment is becoming a competitive advantage for corporations choosing a location.

Albuquerque and Santa Fe are both ranked #1 in the nation in their size, in terms of their attractiveness to the Creative Class.
